A recurring theme in Paul Amato’s research is how family-of-origin characteristics shape a variety of outcomes over the life course. For example, his research has shown that experiencing high levels of family conflict and parental divorce during childhood are linked with elevated levels of psychological distress in adulthood. His work also shows that interpersonal problems in the family of origin predict a variety of relationship outcomes in the early adult years, including serial cohabitation, divorce, and a general pattern of relationship instability. He teaches courses in research methods, statistics, and family instability.
